Welcome, current and future Cyclones!

The Communication Studies Program at Iowa State University a major and minor to prepare students for exciting and rewarding careers as a professional communicator. Students who pursue our program graduate with the knowledge and skills needed to start a career and make a positive impact on the world.

Major in communication studies

A Communication Studies (COMST) major will enable you to think critically, giving you the ability to examine complex communication issues, and develop and implement strategies grounded in evidence-based research. This prepares you for careers in business and industry and graduate education. You will also find your career opportunities enhanced in professions requiring applied communication expertise, e.g., human resource management, public relations, training and development, sales management, recruitment, event planning, sales, management, organizational development, business communication, law, and international and intercultural relations.

Degree requirements

Students must earn at least 120 credits, with 45 credits at the 3000-4000 levels, and a minimum of 33 credits in COMST to be eligible for a B.A. in Communication Studies. As majors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Communication Studies students must meet both College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and University-wide requirements for graduation in addition to those stated for the major. Course numbers, descriptions, and options can be found in the ISU Course Catalog.

I feel that I have learned how to communicate in the best way possible for each situation I am in, and this is something I can continue to grow upon in the years to come.
