The Communication Studies program will host a Friends and Family Day on October 26th from 8:30 am-3:30 pm. You’ll get to meet some of the professors you’ve heard about from your students while taking classes and learning from them yourself.
We will begin the day with a welcome and orientation session before heading to the first class. A coffee and pastries bar will be provided for our mid-morning break to fuel up for two more classes. Lunch will be on your own, so family and friends can decide the best way to see this part of their student’s life:
- -The dining hall where they usually eat.
- -The off-campus restaurant where they work.
- -The MU or HUB where they grab lunch and study during the week.
Then it’s back to school for our fourth class, followed by Commencement. Once your professors certify that you’ve passed your classes, you’ll be awarded a certificate as you walk across the stage.
Children are welcome to attend! Exploring a college campus, sitting in a classroom, and meeting professors can help demystify the idea of a university education. Becoming comfortable on campus now may help them feel more comfortable when it comes time to attend college later. We don’t specify an age limit for our younger guests, but we request that they either be able to sit at a desk for a 50-minute class or be able to leave the classroom with their grown-up when needed.
Communication Studies topics that classes may cover include Health Communication, Family Communication, Human Communication Theory, Digital Communication, and Conflict Management.

FAQ
No! Friends and Family of Communication Studies are all people who are interested in Human Communication, support a student program at ISU, or think spending a day learning about Communication sounds fun. If you share an interest in communication, you are a friend of our program.
No, they may have a part time job or a project to complete. But they are most welcome, and there is no fee for their attendance. Let us know on the registration site if they are coming so we can account for them in class sizes.
Yes! Everyone is welcome!
Tell everyone to join you! The best thing you can do for this day is to help us spread the word. In our first year we have a very low advertising budget, so share the information by email or social media, and tell everyone you know to come support our Communication Studies students!
Yes! The greater number of people who attend, the better for the current students and program. Bring everyone.
Carver Hall is the home of Communication Studies. We’ll be meeting in Carver 205 for orientation, and will go to classrooms in Carver for our class meetings.
Parking at meters and in most campus lots is free on the weekend! Lots 65, 5 and 8 are closest to Carver Hall. See map.
Email Dr. Mary Fornoff, mfornoff@iastate.edu. We’ll be constantly checking throughout the morning.
This is our first year. We hope to expand in the future. Please let us know what classes/programs you would like represented in the future.
This program is completely separate from ISU undergraduate enrollment. All money will go into putting on this great event, and any extra money made will go directly back to the Communication Studies Program to benefit the students who are a part of the program. In the future, we envision a student scholarship fund, student research fund, study abroad assistance and other program use to to support students in the Communication Studies Program.
Yes! Email Dr. Mary Fornoff, mfornoff@iastate.edu, to inquire. This is our first year, so we don’t have money to support scholarships but we hope to in the future.
