Since graduating from Iowa State University in the spring of 2018 with a major in Communication Studies and a certificate in Leadership Studies, Elizabeth Settles Huffman has embraced a variety of roles that have allowed her to build on the skills she gained during her time at ISU. Elizabeth has had a wide variety of roles to put her communication skills into practice, including administration, communication specialist and entrepreneurial endeavors.

“My studies in Communication have been particularly beneficial in connecting with my audience, whether in person, verbally, or through written and virtual communication,” said Elizabeth. Specifically in her current position, Elizabeth produces a weekly newsletter that plays a vital role in connecting colleagues and fostering a positive work culture, showcasing how her Communication Studies background continues to influence her career path. Looking back on her journey, Elizabeth recalls a moment that truly demonstrated how her COMST education prepared her for her professional life. While working with a diverse group of colleagues, she recognized a situation where a coworker was being marginalized because of their racial identity. Thanks to the communication skills she developed in her studies, Elizabeth was able to intervene, offer support, and engage HR in finding a solution. Using her previously learned COMST skills, she was able to recognize the situation and quickly adapt to solve the problem.

For current Communication Studies students, Elizabeth offers valuable advice: the versatility of a COMST degree opens doors to a wide array of career possibilities. “Whether pursuing law school, further academic studies, or jumping straight into a full-time job, Communication Studies can help you achieve your goals,” said Elizabeth. She emphasizes that the lessons learned in Communication Studies don’t just prepare you for professional success but also offer personal growth and insights into understanding others.
